A Brief Introduction to GPT-4

OpenAI has created GPT-4, a large-scale multimodal deep learning model that can accept both text and image inputs and output text. While it may not be as competent as humans in real-world scenarios, GPT-4 exhibits human-level performance on several academic and professional benchmarks. For example, GPT-4 scored in the top 10% on a simulated bar exam, whereas its predecessor, GPT-3.5, scored in the bottom 10%. The team worked for six months to fine-tune GPT-4 using insights from adversarial testing and ChatGPT to enhance its accuracy, steerability, and compliance with safety protocols.

GPT-4: The Next Generation Language Model Revolutionizing AI and NLP

Over the last two years, OpenAI has rebuilt its entire deep learning framework and collaborated with Azure to design a supercomputer capable of handling their workload. GPT-3.5 was created a year ago to evaluate the system and improve its theoretical foundations. After addressing the bugs and refining the methodology, GPT-4 was trained with remarkable stability, making it the first large model with accurately predicted training performance. The team is concentrating on dependable scaling and intends to refine their methodology to anticipate future capabilities far in advance for safety purposes.

GPT-4's text input feature is now accessible through ChatGPT and the API, with a waitlist, while the image input feature is being prepared for wider availability through a single partner. OpenAI Evals, an automated evaluation framework for AI model performance, has been open-sourced to enable users to report any issues with their models and guide further enhancements.
